In practical terms, the residents I work with describe San Miguel as a city where they walk home at night, leave their wallets on café tables, & let their kids walk to school. That is the lived reality for the vast majority of people here.

That said, safe does not mean immune. Petty theft happens. ATM skimming happens. Tourist-targeted scams happen, just as they do in Barcelona or Rome. Sensible habits, don't flash expensive watches, use ATMs inside banks, lock your car, are the same as in any city you would visit anywhere in the world.

How San Miguel Compares to Other Expat Towns

Among the cities most often discussed by foreign retirees, San Miguel sits in the same safety conversation as Mérida, Querétaro & parts of the Lake Chapala area, & well ahead of certain coastal cities that have had episodic security issues.
