What Is the Safest Expat Town in Mexico?
San Miguel de Allende consistently lands at the top of every list of safest expat towns in Mexico. A grounded look at why, what 'safe' actually means here, & how it compares to other expat destinations.
Safety is the question I get on almost every first call with a new buyer. They have read the headlines about Mexico, & they want to know honestly what life feels like on the ground here.
The short answer: San Miguel de Allende consistently ranks among the safest cities in Mexico for expats, & it has for years. It is one of the main reasons Condé Nast Traveler readers have voted it the Best Small City in the World multiple years running.
Why San Miguel Sits at the Top of the Safety List
A handful of factors stack in San Miguel's favor.
• It is not a cartel transit corridor. The cities that consistently make headlines for violence in Mexico are typically positioned along drug trafficking routes, ports, or border crossings. San Miguel is not.
• The economy is built on culture & residents, not extraction. Tourism, real estate, food & art are the local industries. There is no resource or industry that draws organized crime competition.
• The international community is large, visible & invested. San Miguel has hosted a meaningful expat population since the 1940s. The city has matured around that presence with services, security, governance & infrastructure that reflect it.
• Walkable & visible streets. Centro is dense, walkable & busy at almost all hours. Eyes on the street is a real factor.
What 'Safe' Actually Means Day to Day
In practical terms, the residents I work with describe San Miguel as a city where they walk home at night, leave their wallets on café tables, & let their kids walk to school. That is the lived reality for the vast majority of people here.
That said, safe does not mean immune. Petty theft happens. ATM skimming happens. Tourist-targeted scams happen, just as they do in Barcelona or Rome. Sensible habits, don't flash expensive watches, use ATMs inside banks, lock your car, are the same as in any city you would visit anywhere in the world.
How San Miguel Compares to Other Expat Towns
Among the cities most often discussed by foreign retirees, San Miguel sits in the same safety conversation as Mérida, Querétaro & parts of the Lake Chapala area, & well ahead of certain coastal cities that have had episodic security issues.
The U.S. State Department issues advisories by Mexican state. Guanajuato state, where San Miguel sits, has historically carried elevated overall advisories driven by industrial cities elsewhere in the state, not by San Miguel itself. Read the advisory carefully, the specific exceptions matter.
The Honest Caveat
No place is risk-free. The honest framing is this: San Miguel is among the safest places you can live anywhere in Mexico, & for most of the buyers I work with, it feels safer in daily life than the US cities they came from. That is not a marketing line, that is the consistent feedback I hear after a year on the ground.
If Safety Is Driving Your Decision
Come visit, walk Centro at 10 PM, eat dinner outside, take a taxi back to your hotel, & feel the city for yourself. Numbers & advisories can only tell you so much. The streets will tell you the rest.
When you are ready to look at neighborhoods that combine safety with the lifestyle you want, the Neighborhoods guide & current listings are the right next steps. The honest look at moving here covers everything else you should weigh before committing.
