Once a vast horse ranch, Atascadero was developed in the 1960s and has been equally popular with wealthy Mexican nationals and expats ever since. This quiet, sprawling residential neighborhood enjoys a cooler microclimate, several degrees cooler than the rest of the city, thanks to abundant mature vegetation and proximity to the El Charco del Ingenio nature preserve.
