On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the streets of Centro belong to the locos. The Desfile de los Locos, the Parade of the Crazies, is one of San Miguel de Allende's most colorful annual traditions, & for a few hours every June it turns the historic center into a day-long street party of music, dancing, masks, face paint, & participants dressed as superheroes, clowns, devils & cartoon characters.

The parade is organized by the neighborhoods of San Miguel in honor of San Antonio de Padua, & it traditionally takes place on the first Sunday after June 13th. It begins around 10 am at the Church of San Antonio, winds through the main streets of the historic center, & ends at the Jardín Principal. Floats roll slowly through the crowd, dancers spin through the cobblestones, & the locos toss candy, fruit & small toys to spectators along the way. Bring a hat, bring a bag, & be ready to catch.

It is one of the oldest & most anticipated traditions of the year, & it brings everyone together in a genuine family atmosphere: lifelong sanmiguelenses, families from the surrounding ranchos, expats, & first-time visitors all lining the same sidewalks. Children sit on shoulders, abuelas claim curb seats hours early, & every balcony along the route fills up by mid-morning.

What makes the Desfile de los Locos feel so distinctly San Miguel is the mix. Religious devotion to San Antonio sits comfortably next to satire, pop culture & pure costume joy. One block you will see a saint carried on a platform, the next a dozen Spider-Mans dancing to cumbia behind a sound truck. It is loud, it is bright, it is generous, & it captures something essential about how this city celebrates.

If you are staying in Centro, you will not need to plan much. The parade will find you. If you are coming in from Los Frailes, Atascadero or one of the outer colonias, arrive early, park on the edges of Centro, & walk in. Streets close, traffic stops, & the city slows down for the day.

These are the moments that make people fall in love with San Miguel & decide to stay. If you are exploring what life here actually looks & feels like, start with our neighborhood guide, & when you are ready to talk seriously about making the move, schedule a consultation.
